First you need 2 AA batteries. It can be plugged into a USB socket, but unless you're sitting next to it, the USB cable won't be long enough. It's about 2 feet long. It's twisted like a spring so it can stretch, but mine keeps slipping out of its socket when I try. *** The flashlight itself is on a hinge so you can point it up, down, or anywhere in between. The light is brightest directly below. So unless you're in a room with someone who needs total darkness, it shouldn't bother anyone while still being able to read.
