At first I thought it was my human error. At no time did they send me a set of shelves that were welded upside down. So, as an engineer, I diagnosed the problem from different angles, and yes. There's no way around it. They are. The design relies on gravity and wedging to hold the shelves in place, so the connection points are slightly narrower at the top than at the bottom (therefore the wedge can only slide to a certain limit and lock in very firmly). The problem is that all the narrower ends are at the bottom of all the shelves. Instead of being flat shelves, they become flat wire baskets with the crossbars acting like small walls. I didn't have that in mind for my purpose at all. But I also don't know what to expect if I were to return it. So I guess I'll do my duty.
