problem after problem. Avoid!

Ergh. I wanted to like this printer. And it worked well for the first few months of ownership. It printed faster and with better quality than the Epson WF-3620 it replaced. But after about four months, when only a few copies per week were being printed, the problems began. First, I got a cryptic error message on the display that didn't go away no matter how many times I restarted the printer. I chatted with HP support for about two hours and finally they instructed me to use a special series of keystrokes (super reset I think) which cleared the error code. It hasn't happened since then, but I'm really annoyed that I wasted so much time. Then I found that the ADF duplex function was not working properly on this printer - when trying to scan or copy a two-sided document, two pages always fed in at once, but with a slight misalignment (single-sided was fine and trying different Documents didn't solve the problem; strangely, my parents' printer with the exact same model doesn't have this problem). I decided that I would live with this problem and only scan/copy in one direction. But today the printer started giving the message "Out of Paper" even though there was paper in the cartridge. Restarting the printer, reloading the paper tray, or using a different paper does not clear the message. Let's get back to Epson. HP, you have let me down and I will not buy any of your printers again. UPDATE 10/18/2017. The "Out of Paper" message on my OfficeJet Pro 6978 disappeared after the printer was unplugged for several months. . Who knows how long it will work normally before it fails again. I also made the mistake of buying another of the same model a year ago for my parents who also use theirs very rarely. Guess what - a week ago, 9 days after the warranty expired, the printer gave the same cryptic error message I used to get with mine, saying there was a paper jam when it wasn't there, and then indicating a problem with the printer. "Printing System". No reboot or even hard reset shown to me by HP support before will fix this. I haven't seen failures like this with any printer I've used, be it inkjet or laser. No more HP!
