I don't know how I managed without it! Before I got it, I used a straight needle or the tip of a pair of scissors to slide the fabric under the presser foot. The pin flexes with the pressure required to get thick layers under the presser foot, is not accurate and can get under the needle. The tip of the scissors is not thin or long enough to bring the fabric close to the needle. Slip thick layers under the presser foot and keep the seam straight as you transition to thinner areas. Without this tool the fabric would move under the presser foot as it is still on the top layers. I tuck the narrow, slightly flexible end into the folds and the flat end into the very thick sections. So glad I bought it!
