I needed a ladder for our 17 year old cat who likes to climb the very high bed but can no longer jump up his own. It took her a few weeks to get used to climbing these stairs, but eventually she started using them. First I showed her how to go up and down the stairs while holding her in my arms. Now she takes the stairs every day and seems to enjoy the easy access to the very high bed. The only thing "wrong" with this staircase is that the top step is too narrow. It would be better if the top step was wide enough for the cat to sit comfortably as this is the starting point when they first come down the stairs and an older cat without a wider 'landing area' is a bit more difficult. .The fabric is a little cheesy (faux suede) and not very stylish, but I can fix that by sewing a new case in a better fabric in the future. (I'm giving this ladder 4 stars instead of 5 because of the fabric.) The steps themselves are sturdy but soft to the touch for a cat's paws. I'm thinking of buying another set of stairs of the same type, just lower so our cat can reach other areas of the house that are under the bed. However, it may take some time for your pet to get used to these stairs. They really are a great item for older animals who can't jump on things like they used to.
