Slightly disappointed with the Mahl Stick

When I ordered the Mahl Stick I originally thought I was getting an oak dowel stick. But to be ok it needed a two piece aluminum bar that bolts together. I thought this is not normal, the 2 sticks don't match in color and the bottom is scratched like before? The purpose and use is the same as the other sticks, although slightly misaligned when screwing together. This may not be a problem if you don't use straight lines to draw.

It works well but is a little thin and the pieces don’t line up perfectly.
