I don't know if all thermometers do this when you suddenly dip them into boiling room temperature water, but the needle flickers/jumps on one higher value temperature instead of slower increase. I assume this is because it's a large face and you usually expect the temperature to rise gradually rather than shocking it immediately. The arrow gently moves down, although when removed from the water, the temperature returns to room temperature. The metal glass/cup clip doesn't appear to be adjustable and snaps into the top of the thermometer, with the connector dropping 1.5 inches from the face. So you can technically adjust the tip depth in a range of about 1 inch. This is my first thermometer so I don't know if the "flickering" is normal, but it seems to give me an accurate reading. a calibration tool or you can use a small wrench to calibrate it according to your needs. Also, the thermometer works great and is sensitive enough to read from room temperature to the moment I take it. Great product with a great one dial at a great price .
