Review on The Perfect Productivity Companion: Logitech K580 Slim Multi-Device Wireless Keyboard for Chrome OS by Wiktor Popiel ᠌

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Satisfactory product quality, good price.

I bought K580 for quiet keys and compact size. Together with the M330 Silent mouse, which did not live up to expectations at all in terms of silence. Unlike a mouse, the K580 is really quiet. The keys emit a slight rustle - it is very comfortable to work at night. Previously, I did not dare to take the K580 because of the price, which seemed too high for such a form factor. But perhaps within 5000 at the moment there are no alternatives, since I have already gone through a lot of options within this amount. However, there is always something that prevents Logitech devices from being highly appreciated. In this case, this is an inconvenient Shift and a pairing mechanism. The arrows are not so important - there is another device for games. But for printing, a large Shift is very necessary. And now for the "magic" of pairing. A long press on F11 (or Fn+F11) pairs with one device. F12 - with another. So, if you pair with two mobile devices, or even accidentally with one, but twice, then it will be very difficult to return to pairing with a computer. The keyboard itself does not do this, even if you long press F11 / F12 to enter it into pairing mode! Requires Logitech Options software to be installed. Next, turn off all other Logitech devices. Select the pairing mode in the application. Turn off the power at the keyboard. Re-enable it. Then the keyboard will forget that both channels were occupied by mobile devices and will connect to the PC. In my opinion, this is a painful mistake for the user and a flaw in the device developers. This is not in the documentation. But! An even bigger surprise awaits you if you are a Linux user. For systems on my PC and laptop (Ubuntu and Mint), Loghitech does not provide Logitech Options. It was possible to restore pairing only by using another laptop with Windows, installing on it Logitech Options, which was unnecessary for other purposes. Now you have to be careful when working with a mobile phone. It's rather annoying that such non-obvious and erroneous behavior is embedded.

Pros
  • Very quiet keys. Short, crisp key travel, very fast typing. This is similar to laptop keyboards, but the keys are even quieter and crisper than most of them. Including the spacebar, which can be quite loud on other "silent" keyboards. The ability to return the classic behavior of the F1 - F12 keys via Fn-lock , which is activated via Fn+Esc. Size and shape. It's really a slim keyboard, thin yet very stable on the table. Compact size without compromising the location of the main keys, which means better access to the mouse lying next to it and more freedom of movement for it. Place for a phone. Although in my case this place is more useful for storing a ballpoint pen or papers from which you can retype the text into a computer. Possibility of typing on the phone. There are reviews that talk about the inability to switch the input language. In fact, in Android, you need to go to the external keyboard settings and check the "2022" and "English" (or other languages) checkboxes there. Then switching will be available via Ctrl + Space (not via Fn + Space, which the built-in Android keyboard responds to immediately after connection, but without changing the input language)
Cons
  • There are two significant drawbacks - these are special keys and the loss of pairing with a computer. Short left Shift , whose place is taken away by an unnecessary and incorrectly working ~`[] key. The key, for which the long Shift was sacrificed, prints the characters drawn on it only when switching to the Mac layout. In other cases, not the characters that are indicated on it are printed. Small "notebook" arrows "up" and "down", although structurally it would not cost anything to increase them, since the keyboard is for a PC, not a laptop. It was enough to move them three millimeters lower and increase the hands - this approach is found in competing models from other manufacturers. Accidentally pairing with two mobile devices can kill the ability to return to working with a keyboard on a computer! It was difficult to figure out how to restore communication with the computer on my own. And what's more, to restore pairing with the USB receiver, you will definitely need a Windows computer. Don't have one at hand? You will have to go to work or to a neighbor and install the Logitech Options software on it)) More details in the comments.
