This item is not fully waterproof. It has a layer of plastic under the soft plush top. This will protect the mattress underneath, but the cover itself will still get wet. Other than that I still love this product a lot. I have two and just swap them out when one gets dirty so I can just toss them in the wash. Holds up well in the wash. Our mattress never got wet.
