Buyer regrets - nothing will get the chemical smell out

I've tried airing this medium, wiping it down with paper towels and putting it in the washing machine TWICE for two hours and it still has that heavy eye tears from the chemical smell of plastic that won't go away. If I can smell it, I can't imagine putting a kitten there to be surrounded by that smell. I really regret the purchase.
