This magnet is ideal for the classic demonstration of magnetic lines with iron filings. The small compass aligns with the magnetic lines. I suspect it's made from Alnico, which was the standard a few decades ago, but it's not as strong as the rare earth magnets that are more popular now and don't lend themselves well to iron filing patterns. It is neatly packaged and comes with a "keeper" to help it retain its magnetism.
