Although I own a pair of high quality Sennheiser HD650 and Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones, I don't take them on planes as they're not compact enough for me. Also, they're designed to be connected via a 3.5mm plug, whether it's an inflight entertainment center or my iPhone XS + dongle/DAC solution, which may be a bit overkill for the packaging. On my last trip I forgot my key/DAC and there was no inflight entertainment on the plane so my ultra compact Klipsch X12i headphones were in a bag. :(I could bring my wireless exercise headphones but they don't work with the inflight entertainment center and FORGET the free headphones given out by flight attendants! and wireless and "enough" to pack compactly, I stumbled across an average one ANC Marshall I won't go into its sonic characteristics as this topic is always subjective, just explaining why I chose these (not in order of priority): 1) Active Noise Cancellation (ANC). Not the best execution to be honest, but given that these are in-ear headphones, that's to be expected. However, it already has excellent passive noise cancellation. Impressively, the sound quality does NOT change when the ANC is on, unlike many other ANC brands, so even a little noise-cancellation when needed is worth the extra cost. 2) wireless communication. uses the Bluetooth 4.0 protocol and is compatible with the aptX codec. Battery life is quoted as 20 hours with BT+ANC or 30 hours with BT only.3) Wired. empty battery? no problem! Just plug in the 3.5mm cable. I also bought a V-Moda speakeasy cable with a Lightning connector instead of a 3.5mm so I no longer have to pack a dongle/DAC! 4) compact. Folds down to a more travel-friendly size. also comes with a velvet lined travel case that folds away when not in use. Again great for on the go! 5) tone. The Marshalls were originally adapted for rock music, so they have a punchy bass which I personally prefer, although not HEAVY like the Beats headphones, but at high volumes can drown out the mids/highs a bit depending on the volume. song (but without distortion, the drivers are very powerful). The only drawback is the high downforce. Out of the box, I could only endure 30 minutes of use before the cartilage on my ears started to hurt. :( To alleviate this, I laid the headphones on the sides of the box overnight to gently "stretch" the headband. Now I can endure about 3 hours continuously.
