I've also always used whole blocks of numbers. However, they don't represent the subtraction well enough because they can't break apart. That's the only reason I bought these binding cubes. I prefer these hands down to learn subtraction. You tie a large number together, then take a few and see what's left. You can then put it back together and form the number you started with by proving that addition and subtraction are opposites, or vice versa. I really haven't found anything else that engages kids so completely in subtraction and helps them fully understand it. I am a certified teacher and would highly recommend them for home schooling in the classroom.
