INSIDE SMELLS BAD in handbags and purses

This is a really nice bag but the quality inside is poor. The "P-leather" on the inside feels very slippery and smells of petroleum. I've been trying to air it out for over a week now but it still smells bad! I bought this as a birthday gift but I doubt I'll give it to a friend because of the foul smell.
