My regular notebook of choice is the gridded Moleskine. So I was pleased to be able to evaluate another gridded journal against an old favorite to see how it measured up. If you can give up whatever cachet there is in a brand name, these Rettacy journals are a real find.Grids are useful for engineering types because they allow you to draw things to scale very easily. But I write more words than draw pictures, and I STILL prefer grids. The lines are closer together than on most ruled pages, so I fit more words in a notebook. The squares make for a nice "To Do” list (I trace a grid square for each check box), and I do sketch things as well. But what about THIS gridded notebook?You actually get two hard-cover notebooks for the price you might normally pay for ONE soft-cover at the stationery store. And while these don’t offer as many pages per journal (192 vs 240), you get more pages in total for the same price (384 vs 240). And the thicker paper in the Rettacy makes for a more pleasurable writing experience.In addition to getting a hard cover, you get two ribbons to mark your place—a gray one and one that matches the color of the cover—and an envelope in the back to stuff the occasional loose sheet. You also get an elastic loop to hold your pen.The paper is nicely coated, so your pen glides easily. The coating did not lead to any ink smearing. And the thicker paper helped eliminate bleed-through to the other side. And the paper just — FEELS more substantial.I recently tried a Beechmore journal, and I was impressed that the paper was 70% thicker than the Moleskine, but disappointed that it offered only half as many lines to write on (due to wider line spacing and fewer pages). These Rettacy notebooks offer paper over 40% thicker than Moleskine—and because you get TWO journals for the same price, you actually get more pages as well.This is a case of getting far more value than you pay for.
