The boxes have a pleasant black surface. The finish is neither glossy nor matte, so don't expect it. The only thing that disappointed me was the packaging. Looks like they used duct tape to hold all the boxes together. I don't like how I try to open the package and my boxes are stuck to the tape. It was difficult to remove the tape from the boxes. The four boxes attached to it will be destroyed. If they were packaged properly with something other than tape I would be much happier with this product.
