Although it says 'wide' it's not as wide as I expected. However, it doesn't budge when my dog uses it and I know it helps hold his back. These ladders were shipped in a small box. This is a foam product that expands when you release it from the pouch. It is very easy to put it in the lid. Schipper Mia took a few days (and lots of cookies) to get used to it, but now she uses it to get up in bed fairly regularly. I am very happy with it. can be used to secure it, but we don't need it. It seems so stable.
