Will only fit old uncoated flat short wrenches

I have tried all combinations of washers and extensions but have not been able to flatten my wrenches so they can be twisted out to use without proper tension and the wrenches fall out of hand . My new truck key and two others have a plastic cover which I even sanded down to get it working but to no avail.
