It requires 2 people to set the code. The first person must hold the tip of the pen to the bottom of the lock while the second person enters the code. We tried using these locks on some luggage where we couldn't use our other locks. Unfortunately, we can't use them either. The end of the wire that goes into the lock is too big to fit through the hole in the zipper on our new luggage set. Pity! Who would have thought that a newly purchased modern luggage set does not fit all previously purchased luggage locks (2 different types). We will keep them and use them for old luggage. FYI: Once you've inserted the end of the wire into the lock, make sure you mix up your code sets or someone could come in, hit the button, and open your luggage.
