Review on πŸ“· Nikon D3300 Black Digital SLR Camera with AF-P DX 18-55mm VR Lens by David Bott

Revainrating 5 out of 5

The best (early) birthday present I've ever received!

I've done a lot of 3D scanning and photogrammetry, and using the older Nikon L100 for aiming wasn't a hard blow for me. In point-and-shoot mode, you can't easily control shutter speed, ISO, or the end result, for example. After carefully researching DSLRs (this and the Canon T6i Rebel), I spontaneously settled on this camera (not the D3400, which was $100 more expensive, and not the T6i, which was out of my price range at the time). ...because it was on sale and I needed a better camera to capture reality (I use Agisoft Photoscan for photogrammetry). After taking a few shots in all modes, the visual quality of my images was a HUGE leap, especially when using smartphone cameras and the COOLPIX L100 which would never allow me to achieve this level of detail. It took me a couple of hours to get used to the camera, especially all the settings like Live View and the viewfinder (which I fell in love with) and I can control the graininess of my images. My favorite mode is manual and I set the focus to manual focus to have complete control over my images and shots. In photogrammetry, you don't want autofocus to blur your details. I also like that the camera comes with everything you need to get started, including a lens that allows me to capture beautiful 18-55mm images. I can't wait to take it with me on my next trip to Palm Springs and take pictures of the mountains. So pros and cons. - Lightweight - Easy to set up. I assembled the camera in minutes and was ready to play. Lots of modes to play with including cartoonish filters and outlines. it's real-time.--Camera RAW. For the type of work I do, the RAW camera (which saves as .NEF if you're using PS CC or higher, I'll cover that in the cons) has the insane quality you need to do your best to take photos. - Lots of accessories from lenses to remote shutter releases (which I will soon need for outdoor projects). I need a fixed 35mm lens and a telephoto zoom lens to really play with the image. I wonder if there is a lens that takes HDR images. The light intensity bar helps me a lot to know if my photos are over or underexposed. Cons: Live View takes a little longer to process photos after taking them. Even with a faster shutter speed, I'm waiting for the shot I just took. Not that it's a bad thing, but when I have a client or I'm fighting daylight, I want to see my photos faster. I usually use Live View to frame my shots when the tripod is shorter than me.-- Live View when it's constantly draining your battery. I knew about it so I had to buy a replacement battery to fix it. -- The camera collects grease and fingerprints, so be sure to clean the camera. -- If you want to edit your images in Photoshop or Adobe Lightroom, please note that you cannot open an .NEF file if you are using an older version of Photoshop (I use CS5). is a RAW camera format. You need to use a free app called Adobe DNG Converter, which you can get from Adobe, to be able to open your photos in Camera RAW (you open it with Bridge) for editing. An SD card if you intend to use Camera RAW frequently. I bought a 32GB SD card with the camera and am very happy with it. NEF files are HUGE. Approximately 27 MB, depending on camera settings. Initially I had trouble getting the Pre Measure Lighting option to work. It might have been my camera settings so I'll look into that. Aside from a few negatives, this is a great camera that I will be using extensively for everything from portraits to visual effects work. The photo of the flower was taken at home with the lens set to 55 and the details were perfect, especially the depth of field. I edited the image in the camera menu for retouching and it was easy to do. Can't wait to get more lenses and take BEAUTIFUL pictures.
