Bought this lens for the original NEX-5 as it was purchased without it. I used a kit lens from another NEX camera on this NEX-5. The sharpness of this pancake lens and the kit lens is very similar. The size of this 16-50mm is just over half that of a kit lens. The width between them is about the same. This pancake lens is almost the size of a 16mm f/2.8, just 4mm longer. Keep in mind that this lens almost doubles in length when it's on. It is no problem for me. On older NEXs like the original 5 and 3, there's a lot of vignetting in the corners at the widest end of this lens. This is a reasonable compromise for a very wide angle. Some people who do extensive lens measurements say this lens looks more like a 14.7mm than a 16mm, but on compatible NEXs like the NEX-6 the final image is cropped slightly to avoid angular vignetting to eliminate, bringing the image back to about 16 mm wide. There's also some moderate distortion, particularly at the widest angles. Overall I am very happy with this lens as the pros far outweigh the cons for me. I would advise anyone looking for a 16mm prime lens to save up a few bucks and get this one instead. The β faster aperture isn't worth staying at 16mm all the time, and this one has OSS (Sony Optical Image Stabilizer) which the Prime doesn't have. I hope Sony makes more pancake lenses in the future!
