I can't comment on the actual wattage of these bulbs but the brightness is definitely there. I have no doubt they can (or do) draw 55 watts, but I haven't tested that. Still, they made a big difference in my high and low beams and their range is much better than the factory discharge bulbs. I also don't know what voltage the rectifier is supplying the LEDs with. In case you're wondering, it certainly works with a factory ballast that produces 42VAC on a D3S lamp. I can't speak to other types of lamps that contain mercury and operate at higher voltages.
