I bought these to match our new dining table which is black with white fabric and black trim and looks fantastic. Then we use the Kpod dispenser in our fridge. I got tired of dripping coffee on the SS tray so I put it there. now one of these coasters catches the drips and every 3 days I just wash it off in the sink. I also put my mug in the microwave where my 3 year old can't reach it to get it dirty and scratched. My small ceramic mug vibrates wildly on the espresso machine; I put one under the cup on the stainless steel tray and now it won't slip while I'm making espresso. I use them on "cheaper" furniture so no rings, I've even used 4 as non-slip cutting board pads. I ordered a 2nd set without a mount to fill the ones I use all the time.
