Review on HP X24Ih FHD Gaming Monitor: 144Hz, 1920X1080P, FreeSync, IPS Panel by Andrew Clayton

Huge bang for the buck

I bought this HP X24i 1080p monitor to replace an outdated Dell monitor that I use to work from home. Sorry, this isn't a gamer review, but to say how critical I am of monitors, my "other" monitor used for photo and video editing is a 4k NEC Multisync EA275UHD with Datacolor Spyder5 for color calibration . I know this doesn't prove anything, but I'm still excited about the HP X24i, which sets the refresh rate to 120Hz, the highest supported by the machine's GPU. For no reason since I'm not gaming I'm also running it at the fastest available latency of 1ms. This indicates the lack of visible deterioration, so why not? The most noticeable positive feature of this monitor is its sharpness. The pixel boundaries are extremely sharp, which ensures a very high resolution despite the fact that the resolution is not state-of-the-art. This makes the monitor feel like its resolution is higher than 1920x1080 and I'm sure it translates well in games considering you don't need that expensive graphics adapter to get the same FPS at higher resolutions to execute. In comparison, the pixels on my 4k NEC monitor are a bit washed out, with some spilling into neighboring pixels. Another amazing feature is how bright this monitor can be made. The factory default is 90% brightness, but I lowered it to 80% and it's still brighter than what's possible on my NEC monitor. Brightness means you "close" (narrow) your pupils and increase the depth of field so your eyes don't have to work as hard to refocus as they move from looking at the center of the screen (closer) to looking . in the corners (further). I'm amazed at how much less tired my eyes are at the end of each day when I look at this monitor an average of 8-9 hours a day. I had no idea what I was missing - and I don't even use the blue light reduction feature - I rely too much on color accuracy to benefit from it. You don't need it but have everything you need which makes it very valuable.
