I don't know why they are called XL. When I first found out about them a few years ago, they were very hard to find. It was easier and cheaper to do it yourself. I can't find them now and see them for sale everywhere. I bought a few from the Grove Collaborative and they left lint all over them. i hated her My dog ended up stealing them for himself. I've refrained from buying new ones for years because I don't find them as big as they should be. From my research, they should be about the size of a soft ball. It's not like this. They're about the size of a baseball, so I'm not sure what's particularly big about them. Aside from the beef I have with the suggested size, they work fine. I was worried about getting something with color as half of our closets are light or white. So far I don't see any color transfer at all. I've seen people complain about how they smell, but I can't smell anything. They definitely speed up the drying time. Typically my towels dry in 45 minutes and my dryer is less than 2 years old. I don't use fabric softener on towels. (You definitely shouldn't do this, you can't towel dry with fabric softener, water won't soak into the fabric.) These dryer balls dry my towels to moisture in less than 30 minutes, depending on their size. I also use more than one set in my dryer because I still wonder why they are so small. My only real problem with them is that they get stuck in my underwear quite often. I find them tucked into shirtsleeves at every load. When I made my own and made them the size of a soft ball, they didn't do it that often. This only happened maybe every 3 or 4 downloads. They get stuck with every download. I have to be careful because sometimes when I put the laundry away it falls on the floor and my dog tries to grab it. They make great and safe dog balls but not for the price. (I see on their website that they sell seconds so you can use the 'ugly' balls in the laundry for less or give them to your dog to play with. Happy to get some but they are currently sold out. ) Finally , I really like that they are as eco-friendly as possible. Their packaging and bags contain no plastic. Not sure what the thing at the end of the rope is, it looks like some kind of nutshell, looks very original and neat!
