I have probably 4 brands of mattress covers for my 3 children who use cradles. This is my second favourite. The top is not as soft as mine but better than others. It's the thickest and seems to have a lot of layers so I think it offers protection as it doesn't have a waterproof vinyl lining. All my kids currently go to bed in diapers or sweatpants. Except on the rare occasions when they use the potty and don't pull it out, they don't actually wet the bed, so I can't comment on that. when it's sealed. It's a good set and I'm glad I got it. Update: My son took off his pants and night diaper and fell asleep like that. Then he wet the bed. It REALLY soaked the bed and made the mattress damp. Therefore, it does not have a sealed liner.
