Perhaps the chlorine and pool chemicals are starting to eat away at the materials, but these water shoes didn't survive the summer. The velcro on the shoe itself (rather than the strap) began to peel off over time. Now the strap just dangles because there is nothing to attach it to. We bought two pairs of these for our daughter and they just don't last. They're not bad water shoes when they're new, and they probably work better in a lake or ocean.
