You don't think you need it until you rip the antenna off a branch.
The spring fits snugly and is attached close to my hardware and antenna. I bought my first antenna cheaply and didn't buy a spring within the first two weeks, the antenna broke at the base and I had to buy a new antenna. Don't skimp this spring. 1995 Wrangler.
