When I opened the packaging the smell of plastic was unbearable. I've tried rinsing it twice, then leaving it in vinegar water overnight, then baking soda again, then hot water, then cold water, then leaving it overnight again and still the taste of the water was so strong I didn't could drink. a cup. I wondered if the water was so bad it could actually be toxic. DO NOT BUY this product unless you are going to use the water for something other than human consumption. Btw after seeing how bad this one is I bought a collapsible Colman water carrier and it was only marginally better but still useless. Don't waste money on it. Instead, buy 2-gallon water jugs from the grocery store.
