I tried them recently when my third child was born. Breastfeeding pain is unbearable for me. I would rather give birth again than suffer from breastfeeding. Bleeding, cracking, afraid of every feeding. Lanolin offers minimal relief. I only succeeded with the first one because I used the funnel for the first 5 months. Because of this, my baby had to breastfeed for very long periods (45-60 minutes at a time) and I felt like I was breastfeeding 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. My stash was barely gone. I tried pumping exclusively with my second one, but unfortunately I ran out of it for 5 months. I felt like a failure, so I was determined to make it work with that third kid, even if I had to use the funnel again. Shortly after the birth, the well-known excruciating pain returned in the hospital. It got so bad I tried putting a funnel in, but this time the pain got worse for some reason. My doctor and nurses advised me to try this new product called hydrogels that I had never heard of. They gave me samples. I was very skeptical. If lanolin isn't even giving me the relief I need, how are these gel pads supposed to help? But I tried because they insisted. I was shocked at the difference. Although it was still very painful, my pain level had dropped to a more bearable level. I have found that these gel pads protect my nipples from rubbing against clothing, keep the nipple moist and allow my nipples to heal faster. Between them and intermittent ibuprofen, I was able to get through the first week. In the second week, the first attack was only mild pain and I no longer needed ibuprofen. I was shocked. I did "real" breastfeeding with no breast attachment or anything like that! My deliveries are better than ever. I've pumped over 60 ounces. Store excess milk in the freezer until week 3! My child is thriving. Before having this baby I prayed so much that I would be able to breastfeed and I truly believe that my introduction to hydrogels has answered my prayers. Another reviewer complained that they were too sticky and doing more harm than good. They can be sticky at first. It helps to rinse with water before applying. However, I haven't had any major stickiness issues. I've never had a problem with them being difficult to take off. They come off easily for me. The reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is because they are expensive! They're supposed to be replaced every 24 hours and a 2-pack costs almost $8! I feel used in my distress. Another reviewer mentioned that any price is worth the nipple pain relief and I agree so I kept buying them but still feel cheated. I was actually able to stretch each pair for up to 2-3 days with no issues, which helps.
