I've never liked the feel of moving a mouse across an empty desk, so I always use a mouse pad. They are more expensive than fabric tops, but are much easier to clean and last much longer. If you've ever had lunch at your desk and spilled some of it on your mouse pad, you'll appreciate having one of these. They wash off instantly and leave no stains. They're only about 1/8 inch thick, so thinner than some of the others, but the rubber base still sticks to the table and I don't find it noticeable. The light gray, neutral design suits any interior. I've been using these at work and home for at least two years and have never had to switch.
