If you sit completely on the back of the seat, your elbows don't even touch the armrests. Armrests are only adjustable up and down; You have no other choice. In short, these armrests are so bad that I plan to buy a new chair. In the meantime, I spend a lot of time working hard to make the cushions comfortable to use as armrests.
