This is a great product for kittens but the base is too light for even my two very small (8lb) cats to use a scratching post without a more permanent soil attachment. Screwing it into the ground conveniently will work fine. My cats started screwing up when they were under 9 months old. I put a 10 pound weight in the base to make the scratching post usable, but that makes the tunnel a lot less usable. The product is designed for kittens and small cats, so the presence of obstacles inside is important. By attaching it to a larger base, cats won't pull it down every time they try to scratch it. This works great when they get to the triangle to scratch, but my cats usually try to scratch the bottom to get further. The product is very well made but the leverage means a wider base, more weight or smaller kittens are required.
