update, just got off the phone with a very helpful guy from the company that sells this. He explained to me that page coverage is considered %5, which is about 1-1.5 paragraphs of text, so a full page of text would be about 4 times that, meaning 8500 pages is really only 2000-3000. He says it's the industry standard. According to other sites, 5% of the text actually appears to be closer to a third of the page, but that's still about what he claimed. One can only speculate as to why this misleading number has become the industry standard (it's all about making money, of course), but it's a shame. In any case, I now consider this product and its tech support 5 stars. The print quality is excellent, as is the customer service. The first cartridge arrived damaged and they immediately sent me a replacement. The purchase price (which has increased since I bought it) was really good too. Having said that, there is no way I could have gotten 8500 pages out of this cartridge. I would be surprised if I get even half of it. Almost everything I printed was text documents, nothing with excessive use of black. So I really don't know what happened. I am trying another company now and will see how it works.
