As everyone has mentioned, some combed hair has sticky hairs that stick up and mine also smelled like Mike's chemical when it arrived. Since I'm pregnant, I immediately washed the brushes with soap and brush cleaner and let them dry. After cleaning, the smell is gone forever. I wasn't bothered by the flyaway hairs as I got what I paid for. I just used scissors to cut them off. It is important to note that after the brushes are washed, further hair may fall out or split. I'm not sure if it's because I don't pay attention to the brushes when cleaning, or the brushes themselves. However, they work great for me when applying makeup, especially eyeshadow. They take the product, except maybe not a selection brush, but a fan. So I use the smaller eyeshadow brush that comes with the kit instead and it works better.
