Come on Brandon - bring the walkie-talkie

I have a Lafayette base station from the 70's. When it was new I had the antenna over my head and was ready to broadcast from time to time. Then we moved and put it aside. Years later I pulled it out and added a two foot long RS antenna big enough to hear nearby truckers. Unfortunately, Lafayette is dead. Both. I needed to listen again, so I bought the President. I tried it with ASC (Automatic Squelch Control) enabled. It just kills your reception. Even strong signals become intermittent. I disabled ASC, manually turned off the squelch, and I'm hearing a lot more traffic. The radio is designed for a long time. Can't comment on the transmission quality as I'm in radio silence right now unless you need directions. The AC charger generates static electricity. Direct current is also included. I charge it every other night and get more than 30 hours of reception.
