Review on Sekonic L 358 Flash Master Light by Lamar Marshall

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent light meter with some features

This is an excellent light meter that measures both incident and reflected light for steady and flash. Readings are displayed in 0.1 stop increments in a variety of ways that the user can select. There is a memory for multiple measurements and different ways to use the stored values. There are three instant measurement modes with additional multiple measurement options. (1) Wired, meaning plug in the cable, press the button, turn on the flash and meter the light. (2) Wireless, meaning the flash is triggered externally and the meter detects the flash, resets the previous reading and displays the new reading. (3) Wireless, same as wireless but requires additional radio module. I've owned a variety of light meters over the years and this one tops the list. It's a professional tool in the full sense of the word, and not in the distorted sense often misused in the tabloids. (not even white) and at first glance the inscriptions (i.e. key inscriptions) are not recognizable because the contrast is so low. Tilting the tool slightly will change the reflectivity and the white letters will stand out due to the difference in reflectivity. If you use the light meter sufficiently, the markers are no longer needed, but the low contrast is annoying at first. 2. Although the instrument can perfectly measure both incident and reflected light, changing the mode requires mechanical disassembly. The reflected light dome is removable with a bayonet, and the reflected optical element is inserted and snapped into place. These precision parts move, and the moving parts must be lubricated with a light grease. Separate parts need to be carried along with the counter so they can be lost or soiled. The lesson is not to make this mode switch in a field where dust or dirt can get in. In other words, the meter is reluctant to change modes outside of the studio. and the reflected optical element is inserted and snapped into place.
