More protection than frame. Soft but seems to protect and cover the back and sides well.
Buy carefully and you can match the license plate color with the frame. One thing that wasn't obvious was the choice of screws/bolts and caps that came with the frame. There's even a nice, useful Phillips head. The black dots in the parts kit are screw covers that snap together to hide the screws. There are drainage holes in the frame (last photo) so make sure they are on the bottom to allow water to drain off the panel. Overall, I find this case very useful and can recommend it.
