Review on Canon Image CLASS D1620 Multifunction Wireless Laser Printer - Monochrome with AirPrint (2223C024) - Compact and Powerful Printer for Office Use by Matthew Baltimore

I ordered this Canon ImageClass D1620 printer to replace my old Canon MF4320 multifunction printer. My old Canon printer worked great which was one of the reasons I wanted to stay with the Canon brand, but it didn't support network printing and I couldn't print from my Apple tablet. The D1620 solves these problems and more. The printer comes in a large heavy box. The outside of the box will clearly advertise the contents, so you'll need to make sure you're there to take delivery when it arrives. There are small pictures on the top of the box showing how to open it and remove the printer. This is not intuitive. The outer box can be removed from the top. Doesn't fix anything below. This will reveal an inner box wrapped around the printer, encased in styrofoam and secured with tape. You simply remove the tape to unfold the printer by folding the four sides. The top foam cover can be removed and you can lift the printer off the foam base to protect the underside. So you don't have to deal with the printer trying to get it out of the box. The printer package includes a box with a printed Quick Start Guide that explains how to install and set up the printer, and a power cord that connects to the printer. The printer can be configured using a USB connection or an Ethernet network connection, but these cables are not included. The printer comes with an installation CD to install the necessary drivers, software and a digital user manual. The complete user guide is over 700 pages long and is therefore provided as a digital file only. It can also be downloaded in PDF format from the Canon website. The printer itself is quite large and heavy. Some may need a second person to lift it. It's almost too big to use on a computer desk. The sizes are listed on the Revain website and also on the Canon website for the printer. The printer exhausts air through the vents on the side, and Canon recommends positioning the printer so that there is at least 4 inches of free space around it. Luckily, the design is quite compact and doesn't require any assembly. The printer comes with a toner cartridge already installed (accessible through a hatch on the back of the printer). There's a touchscreen display that looks almost like an afterthought, sticking out from the front of the printer. You must be careful not to accidentally damage it when carrying the printer to its destination. To set up this printer you must first install the software from the disc. After installing the drivers, the program will prompt you to turn on the printer. If you are connecting the printer via USB, do not connect the USB cable until the drivers and software have been installed. If you don't want to connect the printer to the computer hard, you can connect the printer via WiFi. In my case, I connected the printer to my desktop computer via USB, but also set up WiFi so I could print wirelessly from my laptop or tablet. After installing the software and turning on the printer, you can use the printer's touch panel to set the language, time zone, date and time. All printer functions (scanning, copying, printing and many other functions) are accessible via the touch panel. After installing the software and setting up the printer, I tried it out by printing from several different computers on my home network. The default setting is duplex printing, but this can be changed in the printer settings on your computer. It prints very quickly and the text is crisp and legible as you would expect from a laser printer. What I like best is that this printer supports Apple AirPrint, so I can easily print documents from both my iPad and laptop. Because the printer can act as a network access point, you can print documents over Wi-Fi from a laptop or tablet without turning on the host computer (my desktop in my case). Then I used the printer as a copier. You can copy documents from either the top document feeder or the scanner under the cover. The touch panel offers multiple copy options, including automatic two-sided copying, which is very convenient. Like the print function, copying is also very fast. Finally I tested the scanner. You can scan in black and white or color using the touch panel. You can also choose what to do with the scanned file. You can scan to email, a folder on your computer, or even a USB flash drive that you plug into a port on the front of the printer. I took a color scan of the diploma and the colors were bright and accurate and the details were crisp. You can also download the MF Scan Utility from the Canon website, which allows you to set up scanning with a computer that is easier to use than the touch panel. So this Canon ImageClass D1620 multifunction printer is a very good printer. It's easy to set up and use, and prints very quickly. The paper capacity is very large and the printer is designed to allow optional paper tray loaders (optional, not included) to be installed when large capacity is required. It works great for my home use, but should work just as well in a small office. I highly recommend it. I try to write informative product reviews.
