Pros: - Large screen - 2 cameras - SD card slot - User friendly interface - Direct upload to Facebook - Brain Age Express Cons: - No buttons to adjust brightness - Internet not that helpful - DS Store a little lacking I've owned Nintendo portable products for a long time, starting with a big, clunky Game Boy from the 90's. But 2 years ago I broke with this tradition and bought a PSP. Don't get me wrong, I love Nintendo games and I love PSP. The only thing that has kept me from buying a DS so far has been the price of the games. It has always been Nintendo's standard not to release a car that can be cheaper. They, like everyone else, kept her from selling CDs for a long time. But when the DSi came out I thought it would improve on an already growing catalog of online support and old cart purchases like PS Store. The DSi XL's interface is nice, easy to scroll and customize the layout of the baskets yourself. The Brain Age Express game that came with it was pretty good too because it's a really great educational game for people of all ages. It was a good move by Nintendo. Cameras are also very helpful. Some would question the need for two, but it makes sense if you want to take photos, it's not like phone cameras where you can't see each other before taking the picture. The internal storage is complemented by an SD slot, where you can easily copy photos and game settings. And you can upload directly to Facebook and other sites, which is also a nice touch. The Nintendo Store is still in its infancy as you need to buy points to buy a lot of games there. Built-in memory is enough. Although I've never bought any of the games they have. Unfortunately, the games on the DS Store are different than those you'll find in stores, making it a little less appealing when they don't have the regular DS catalog or even classic GBA games for sale. Let's hope Nintendo will improve this situation over the years. The internet is another suspicious thing. I only visit 3-4 websites before DS tells me I'm out of memory. So there is no internet now either. There are a few other drawing programs and a clock function, but other than that you'll mainly be using it for gaming. And the DSi XL is very good at that. The main thing that worries me is that I can't control things like brightness or turn off the internet without restarting the DS and going into the on-screen control panel. These things would be easier if there was a built-in button right on the console. That's a great move. Once Nintendo fixes its shortcomings, perhaps the next version will be an improvement on what could be a potentially very powerful multimedia device.
