I'm a size 32 on my waist, so I have a size 32 belt. If you don't stretch it, only about 1-2 inches of the belt will go through the buckle. There is about an inch of strap left if I stretch it to fit snugly, but if I were to buy it again I would go up a size. However, it's a great belt, comfortable, stretchy, versatile, especially with summer wear, and very affordable. There is no point in overpaying 3-5 times for Tommy Bahama branded items or similar.
