This works well in a single element water heater, just snap a photo of the wiring first and of course turn the water heater off. The thermostat is detachable for removal, reads the temperature from the back of the thermostat. It's a good idea to replace it when repairing the heating element. It was a lot cheaper than a new water heater if it doesn't leak but there is no hot water, usually a heating element or thermostat. Note that the heating elements may be retrograde. Removal depends on corrosion, I was lucky mine was finger tight most of the time.
