It allows my swiss army knife to dangle vertically in my pocket along the seams of my pants instead of horizontally at the bottom of my pocket. Works well for this, the clip is flexible enough to easily slide over the edge of the bag without having to part the sides of the clip to do so. The only problem is that the locking ring that came with the knife didn't slide easily into the hole in the clip, so I had to use two rings - one on the knife, one on the clip, and then connect the two rings together. There has to be a better way to do this, but I didn't stop long enough to find out.
