The lamp I got for the low price of $21 (unlike others that looked identical but cost $39) was "raw" ceramic. It has been fired but not colored or sealed in any way and would therefore be extremely difficult to keep clean and not discolored. We solved this problem by simply applying a sealer to it which turned it a brilliant rich white color. . I would personally recommend doing the same. The surface is porous and easily collects dust if left as is. As far as I know, some of these puppy lamps are also battery-operated; However, this one had a standard electrical cord with a plug on one end and a screw socket on the other. It requires a small base, chandelier-like bulbs with a maximum output of 25W and produces an amazing amount of light around the bulb.
