Review on πŸ”₯ Unleashing the Power: The ATEC M2 Offensive Baseball Pitching Machine by James Auzenne

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Normal pitching machine

We have had our ATEC M2 in use for almost three seasons now. All in all, the M2 is a great hitting machine that I would wholeheartedly recommend to serious coaches and players. The M2 truly achieves fastball speeds of up to 90 mph. By using high-stitch, genuine leather baseballs, you can create playful variations in fastball placement and movement for a more realistic AD. If you want to find fastballs in a specific spot, switch to smoother balls with less noticeable seams that will give you more accuracy. The settings also allow you to practice on cam balls and sliders, although the recommended settings for these fields produce such loop braking action. that it's not very realistic. Through trial and error, we came up with our own breaking ball settings. I have three criticisms of the M2 that keep me from giving it 5 stars: 1. Lever Slip: The three levers that calibrate the machine's position do not hold position very well. There is a lot of slip. They calibrate and then have to recalibrate frequently because the machine slips out of place. The M2 has a handle that allows you to keep the machine stable while it tilts. Holding this knob will reduce, but not completely eliminate, the slipping.2. Weak Transport Wheels: The transport wheel rims are painted silver to look like metal, but are actually made of flexible rubber plastic. One day the car slipped out of my hands and landed hard on one of the transport wheels. The tire just jumped off the rim. It was a big pain in the butt to put the tire back on.3. Not Very Portable: The M2 is extremely heavy, making it less portable than it looks. An older trainer may have difficulty setting up the M2 as the top has to be raised more than 5 feet off the ground. On the other hand, the M2 weighs quite a bit due to its solid steel construction. It is extremely durable.4. Reduced speed in cold weather. In the Northeast we often practice in temperatures below 50 degrees. The M2 seems to lose a lot of speed at lower temperatures. I suspect it's because the rubber on the wheel gets stiff when it's cold and doesn't grip the ball as well. But that's just a guess. Update 6/17/20: Borrowed a pocket radar from a friend to test M2 speed in 72 degree mid-Atlantic weather. I was disappointed that the M2 fastball was 10mph slower than the advertised speed. In my experience, the speed of the M2 increases significantly as the weather gets warmer and wetter. However, a 16 km/h difference between hot and moderate temperatures is unacceptable. For this reason I have to downgrade this review to three stars. Verdict: The M2 can be excellent in the right conditions, but its cooler-weather shortcomings make the M2 a dubious choice for high-level programs.
