We bought this with the intention of using it as a tote and then we have a holiday fridge to boot. We made good use of it. The good thing is that it has a removable plastic liner so if something melts or leaks when using it as a cooler, nothing will spill. Also, I think it helps to stay cold too. That's okay, because the side pockets are made of mesh, so you can quickly stash something and have a look (and don't forget what's in there - so I don't mind too many compartments). The front zip compartment is fine - I use it for paper plates, napkins or just flat things. The bungee top is good - you can stuff a ton of stuff in it - towels if going to the beach or even another bag of stuff. is still often used. As a carry-on it worked well for my son who doesn't bring a lot of clothes or doesn't need to pack clothes to avoid wrinkles etc. We had no problem getting it in the top basket. Same size as other real items we have. I'm not sure I would personally use it as carry-on because I don't think all my stuff will fit in there!
