The extension cannot be protected.
The mounting screw just rotates freely in a soft plastic bushing and a low-quality bolt, almost round. I won't be going back because I can fix it myself by gluing on a screw and while it's not super cheap it's a cheaper alternative to something very simple that will hold a lamp or small camera. For something like a DSLR I wouldn't use this at all. I'd rather spend 40€ for a higher quality mount.
