I needed more storage space for books and wanted a shelf that didn't take up horizontal space in our tiny studio apartment. The wall I wanted was too narrow for regular sized shelves. They seem sturdy enough, we've tested their carrying capacity with my beefy Outlander books and they're holding up well.
