Charcoal landing on it leaves a mark, and may melt through. I thought "flame resistant" meant that it would not melt so easily. It is basically a rubbery plastic mat that will protect against grease well and will take the burn from embers and lit charcoal pieces that would otherwise leave a mark on my wood deck. I fear that if I let an ember stay on the mat it will burn through the mat and damage my deck. For that, I only halfway recommend it.
