Review on FiiO FH7 Black Hybrid Earphones with 5 Drivers (1 Dynamic + 4 Balanced Armatures), Customizable Filters, and High-Fidelity Audio for Smartphones, Tablets, and PCs by Darrell Beecher

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Reliable hardware at a great price but they didn't really know what they were going to put up.

The Fiio FH7 are Fiio's flagship models and are aimed at the top IEMs. For their price, they offer excellent value compared to IEMs that cost over $1,000. They look and feel great and come with tons of accessories. At first I was amazed by them, but over time this impression disappeared and finally I started looking elsewhere. The most important thing I learned with the FH7 has to do with the attachments and filters it contains. There's a huge selection of tips to try, as well as three different filters to tweak the high frequencies. When I went shopping I took that as a positive, but it really shows that they didn't have a great idea of how to set it up, so they included a lot of things to play around with to make it feel comfortable at home. You can fix it if you really can't. Filters only limit the amount of high frequencies from a single driver to varying degrees. They can be loud at high frequencies and there's little I can do to fix that. They still sound very good, make no mistake, but the more I listened, the more it sounded a little stilted and unnatural. No filter change could change that. Natural instruments sometimes sound unnatural and some tracks get a bit confused. This is a big point of contention for me as there has been a lot of hype and debate about being as good or better than many IEMs in the $1000 range. After playing around with them for a few weeks I ordered a set of Campfire Andromedas which are superior in many ways and a significant upgrade. Fiio did a great job by including many quality components, but they didn't have a clear idea of what they were doing with it. right now. They have all these cheaper records from Tin and Blon, Fiio and Ikko that offer quality sound and low prices and I thought it was a similar offering but they really missed this one. Chi-Fi has been able to destroy space under $300, but beyond that they haven't been able to make much headway. When Fiio sets up a sequel correctly, I can see that it's very important, but it's actually not that devastating.
